Bells to Toll for St. John's, Historic Over-the-Rhine Parish

1969: "St. John the Baptist church, for more than a century a landmark of Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine area, will be closed at the end of August. The closing, announced at Masses Sunday by Father Aloys Schweizer, O.F.M., pastor, will coincide almost to the day with the anniversary of the founding of the parish 125 years ago.

"St. John's was for many years the largest parish in the archdiocese, but in recent years shifts in urban population have left it with only small numbers of regular parishioners. These parishioners now will become a part of St. Francis Seraph parish, centered one block south of St. John's.

"Founded in 1844 as the first filial parish of Old St. Mary's, St. John's was organized to serve the needs of the rapidly growing German immigrant population. In the fall of that year property for St. John's was acquired at the corner of Green and Bremen (now Republic) streets by a committee headed by Father Joseph Ferneding." Do you have a similar article or picture of St. Joseph of Nazareth, which was demolished about the same time? It was located at the northwest corner of Liberty and Elm and it was also combined with St Francis Seraph.
