Friars Open Center for Information

1948: “A Catholic information center and book shop have been established at 1618 Vine Street, Cincinnati, by the Franciscan Fathers of the Cincinnati Province. The center is opposite St. Francis’ monastery, provincial headquarters. It occupies a former corner store whose windows afford considerable display space.

“St. Francis Book Shop, which for 20 years had a small office in the St. Anthony Messenger building at 1615 Republic Street, has been transferred to the new information center.

“Located a few doors north of the intersection of Vine and Liberty streets in a densely populated section of downtown Cincinnati, the center is expected to attract the attention of many non-Catholics. Information classes and convert instructions have been begun ‘with excellent results.’

“ ‘People readily come to the new information center,’ the Franciscan Fathers say. “They no longer have to ring the doorbell at the solemn-looking portal of the monastery when they want to make inquiries.’

“A guidance clinic has been established at the rear of the premises for those who seek the spiritual advice of the Franciscans. The reading room, furnished with comfortable chairs, features one of the largest pamphlet racks in Cincinnati.” (See The Catholic Telegraph-Register, February 6, 1948)
