Priest-photographer captures ‘aspirations’ of Cincinnati area

1984: “Cincinnati is an ‘aspiring’ town, says Jesuit Father Randall Ebelhar, the photographer-priest whose photographs of area towers have been reproduced on an art poster being sold to benefit the Jesuit Ministry Center at St. Francis Xavier Parish, downtown.

“The poster’s title, ‘Aspirations of Greater Cincinnati,’ is a play on the word ‘spire’ (the subject matter), as well as a reflection of the character of the city, the 33-year-old Owensboro, Ky., native philosophized.

“ ‘The title seemed appropriate. The towers (many, but not all, attached to churches) symbolized the hopes and dreams of the immigrants who built them,’ he told the Telegraph, adding that he discovered as he scoured the neighborhoods for spires that Cincinnatians remain very proud of their city.

“The towers of Cincinnati poster was an idea bandied about last summer by the staff at St. Xavier while Father Ebelhar visited the parish. He became an associate pastor at the parish in September and began hunting for photogenic towers several weeks later.

“From October until February the priest collected shots of 96 churches and other buildings during weekly forays on his day off or snatches of free time from his duties at the parish.

“Of the 38 photographs used in the poster 31 are (or were) church towers and two are from high schools (Mother of Mercy and Withrow). Others shown are the façade of the Isaac Wise Temple, the Mariemont Carillon, the clock tower of the U.S. Playing Card plant in Norwood and the tower atop the Cincinnati Correctional Institute, the Workhouse.

“And how did he happen to name the poster? Well, he mused, that was just an inspiration.” (See The Catholic Telegraph, April 6, 1984)

Yup sure looks like an 80's priest, no collar, no cassock, no biretta, no visible sign. Typical Jesuit, ashamed to be identified as a man of God. We are now all presenters

RE: the Egyptian

Oh please! I'm so glad that you've declared judgment upon this man's intentions from high upon your pedestal! Your comments are truly juvenile!

sorry Anon I just have a thing about a Priest looking like a Priest and being proud of it, just like a policeman in uniform stands out and is respected, (at least by most), a nurse in the laundry bag that passes for a uniform is a sad sight and a nun in stretch pants is a disgrace. Yes we used to have one here, glad she left. If it is juvenile to expect a professional to look professional and wear the uniform of their profession in pride, well so be it

It would be AWESOME if Archbishop Schnurr would make it MANDATORY for all Priests, Deacons, Brothers and Nuns to wear visible habits/collars, etc....

My best friend was a Priest of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. His daily wear? A cassock! He reverently celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (not a meal, or clown Mass, etc...). When not wearing a cassock, he wore a suit with a Roman collar. His name? the late Fr. Norbet J. McCarthy or as some would call him, Black Mac! He loved the Church and the people he served. He took pride in LOOKING like a Priest!

I do not like to see a priest wearing a cassock. Who ever said that they should wear dresses anyway?
